GEECHEE WITCH
FORMAT : LIVE ACTION FEATURE FILM
YEAR : 2024
ROLE: PRODUCTION DESIGN
THE STORY : After her mother-in-law is mysteriously killed, Leah and her husband relocate from Harlem to his family’s estate in coastal Georgia. Out of her element, she grows increasingly convinced someone in the low country has out the “root” on her. Leah’s are realized when she discovers a Boo Hag has been unleashed on her family. Disguised in the skin of past victims, the witch is determined to take Leah’s husband — and her life.
APPROACH : The script dictated that much of this film took place in the place between the waking and dream state, so we leaned heavily into surrealism and heightened realism. Textures were distorted, colors bled into one another, and familiar spaces felt just a little off. The design played with visual echoes — objects appearing twice, once in reality and again in Leah’s distorted perception — creating a sense of disorientation. Light sources were exaggerated, sometimes casting unnatural hues, mirroring Leah’s unstable grasp on what’s real. By blending elements of Southern Gothic aesthetics with unsettling dream logic, the design invited viewers to question whether Leah was awake, asleep, or trapped somewhere in between.
